Dr Johanneke Sytsema has an MA in Medieval German and holds a PhD in Old Frisian. She was researcher on the AHRC funded project Middle Dutch Sentence and Word Phonology (2010-2014).
Together with Prof Lahiri, she published on vowel change, cliticisation and open syllable lengthening in Middle Dutch. A major project outcome was the electronic text edition of Ms Marshall 29, also known as the ‘Boendale manuscript’, which is held in the Bodleian Library. The text of this manuscript is one of the sources for the historical research within the Journey of Words project.
She is subject librarian for Linguistics, Dutch and Frisian in the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, Linguistics lecturer at St Edmund Hall and co-organiser of the Oxford/Groningen Old Frisian Summer School: Old Frisian and its Neighbours
